Gramophone magazine award goes to Lewes resident Lani Spahr
Renowned audio recording engineer Lani Spahr has been honored with Gramophone classical music magazine’s February Editor's Choice Award for Vol. 4 of the historically significant series, Bruckner from the Archives. This marks the second time this series has received such an accolade, with Vol. 1 also having been awarded Editor's Choice.
In reviewing Vol.4, Rob Cowan said, "SOMM's Bruckner from the Archives continues to impress ... with an excellent stereo radio recording of the Fifth Symphony conducted by Christoph von Dohnányi ... [and the] Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra. Congratulations are once again due the SOMM team for a most valuable release."
Formerly a leading performer on period oboes in the U.S., Spahr was a member of Boston Baroque, The Handel & Haydn Society Orchestra of Boston. In addition, he has appeared with many of North America’s leading period instrument orchestras. As a modern oboist, he was the principal oboist of the Colorado Springs Symphony Orchestra, the Colorado Opera Festival, the American Chamber Winds and the Maine Chamber Ensemble.
Spahr lives in Lewes with his wife Judy and is an active volunteer for Coastal Concerts, where he is a popular lecturer for the premier classical music organization. His Performance Insights lectures are designed to enhance the concert experience as well as to entertain and educate. Using audio and visual aids, Spahr delves into various facets of the concert focusing on composers, works being presented, historical perspectives and anything that might help the audience have a fuller understanding of what they are about to hear.
