Guys with Ties participation fosters leadership at H.O.B.
During the 2023-24 school year, H.O. Brittingham Elementary School launched the Guys with Ties student organization.
The initiative is aimed at fostering leadership, professionalism and positive character development among young men in grades K-5. The club recently welcomed new members into the organization.
“The club’s mission is to inspire students to dress for success, demonstrate respect and engage in community service,” said Julie Hickman, assistant principal. “We stand firm with our motto, ‘Look good, feel good, do good!’”
Members of the club wear ties to symbolize their commitment to excellence and integrity. Students are provided a button-down shirt and a Cape-branded tie. This year, courtesy of a grant from the Cape Henlopen Educational Foundation, members were also provided white Nike Air Force 1 sneakers. Students attend meetings together to discuss a variety of topics. They identify ways to promote a good first impression, show kindness and be respectful, and learn how all these qualities work together to help them become positive role models and valuable leaders in and out of the classroom.
“Dressing professionally is just the beginning,” said Justin Cureton, HOB teacher and club advisor. “Our goal is to instill values of respect, leadership and responsibility in our members, helping them become role models in their school and community.” Throughout the year, students have the opportunity to hear from guest speakers and participate in service projects. Guys with Ties members recently attended a Cape High boys’ basketball game where they put their knowledge and skills into practice by greeting attendees.
