Harry Allen Coss, beloved husband, father, grandfather

February 19, 2025

Harry Allen Coss passed away peacefully surrounded by family Friday, Feb. 7, 2025, at 97. He was born Oct. 30, 1927.

Harry was a creative, caring man who deeply loved his family, classical music, history, a good joke, good food, and art. Harry grew up in Ohio, joined the U.S. Navy, and served on the submarine Sea Robin. There is a photo of him in National Geographic, painting a map of South America on the submarine to commemorate the rounding of Cape Horn. After leaving the service, Harry settled in Toledo, Ohio, where he started a career in real estate and met and married Mary Weaver in 1949. They had three daughters to whom Harry was a devoted and doting father, going to every concert, recital, school function, and art show that his children were a part of. A fond childhood memory of his daughters was the winter Harry created a magical ice rink in the backyard with lights and stereo speakers hanging from the elm trees for all to enjoy. The family moved to the Washington, D.C. area in 1967, where Harry continued his career in real estate. In 1997, Mary passed away. Months later, one of Mary's cousins was visiting the family to celebrate Harry's 70th birthday and invited an old friend of hers who lived nearby to join them. Harry and Maddy became quick companions, and were married in October 1998, beginning their new chapters together and quickly becoming grandparents. In 2004, Harry and Maddy moved to Lewes and lived in a house that Harry designed, a dream come true for him. Harry became very active in Lewes life, taking piano lessons, art classes at Rehoboth Art League, joining community groups, and enjoying being less than a mile away from his grandchildren, which allowed for many celebrations and happy times with family.

Harry is survived by his wife, Maddy Coss; daughters, Shelley Coss, Marcia Coss (Steve) and Vivian Coss (Nick), stepdaughter and stepson-in-law, Lisa and John Zechiel; and grandchildren, Lily Zechiel and Enzo Zechiel.

A private memorial will be held by his family.
