The NFL season officially starts tonight with a game between the New England Patriots and Pittsburgh Steelers. Usually the defending champion does not look forward to the start of the next season. They would like to celebrate the victory as long as possible!
I can almost guarantee that the Patriots are psyched to get this season started, so they (and we) can forget about their ridiculous off-season. Enough about them. I hope my Philadelphia Eagles can maintain their scoring pace from the preseason in their first game against Atlanta on the first Monday night football game. Thankfully that game starts at 7 o'clock so I can enjoy the entire game.
I hope the Eagles don't underestimate Atlanta just because they had a terrible season last year. They still have a very formidable offense with Matt Ryan at quarterback and Julio Jones at wide receiver. We will see what those two can do against the Eagles questionable new defensive secondary.
Watching the U.S. Open on Tuesday night was very cool because it will probably be the last time Venus and Serena Williams ever play each other in a significant Grand Slam match given their respective ages of 35 and 34. There is about a one million to one chance of something like this ever happening again in any individual sport. It is absolutely amazing that two sisters were and still are good enough to play each other 27 times in a professional sports tour.
As Serena Williams goes for the calendar Grand Slam and 22 overall major titles let's also remember how good the woman she's about to tie, Steffi Graf, really was. It seems to me that the media can only talk about the current star as the best one ever. In her day, Steffi's forehand was as good as Serena's is now. Saying that makes me feel old!
Let's also remember Roger Federer. I will be cheering for him to win at least one more major championship and this weekend might be the one. Go Roger!!
