John Danias, proud of Greek heritage

John Danias, a kind and hardworking man whose journey touched the hearts of many, passed away Wednesday, March 26, 2025. Born Jan. 29, 1930, in Platanos, Greece, John's vibrant spirit and dedication shone brightly throughout his remarkable life.

In 1952, filled with hope and determination, John arrived in New York City from his beloved Greece. He became the maître d' at the esteemed Waldorf Astoria, where his warm hospitality and gracious demeanor left a lasting impression on all who met him.

Love found its way when John married Penelope in 1962. Together, they embarked on new adventures, moving to Wilmington in 1964. There, John showcased his entrepreneurial spirit by owning and operating various businesses for many years. Alongside Penelope, he also managed a chain of car parking lots in Manhattan, turning hard work into success with unwavering dedication.

John's faith and heritage were the pillars of his life. He was deeply involved with the Holy Trinity Church in Wilmington, where he generously gave his time and energy. After retiring to Ocean City, Md., he continued his devotion by dedicating countless hours to St. George's Greek Orthodox Church, a place he cherished dearly.

Proud of his Greek roots, John shared his culture with joy and enthusiasm, enriching the lives of those around him. His legacy of kindness and hard work continues to inspire all who knew him.

John was a loving family man. He is preceded in passing by his parents, Nicholaos Danias and Anastasia Danias; and his daughter, Irene Payne. He is survived by his cherished daughter, Fifi Hiotis-Blackburn; and his beloved dog, Brodie.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, April 3, at St. George’s Greek Orthodox Church, 8805 Coastal Hwy., Ocean City, Md., with visitation from 10 to 11 a.m. Entombment will follow at Epworth Methodist Cemetery, 187 Henlopen Ave., Rehoboth Beach.

To honor John's memory, contributions may be made to St. George's Greek Orthodox Church, reflecting his lifelong commitment to his faith and community.
