John J. Koch, devoted husband, father

April 10, 2025

John J. Koch, 84, recently of Lewes, passed away at his home in Bloomington, Ill., Monday, April 7, 2025.

He was born April 18, 1940, in Camden, N.J., to John and Katherine Koch (née Smith). After graduating from high school, John joined the U.S. Marine Corps and spent time stationed in California and Okinawa, Japan.

In his 30s, John embarked on a solo road trip to Alaska, a journey that remained one of his most cherished memories. An avid amateur photographer, he kept the photos from that trip with him throughout his life.

John eventually settled in Landenberg, Pa., after marrying his wife Debbie (née Taylor) in 1979. He spent many years working as a project engineer at the Franklin Mint in Franklin Center, Pa., before leaving to pursue his dream of owning a small business. Appreciative of good craftsmanship and a keen woodworker himself, he founded Timeless American Crafts, a handcrafted goods store in Chadds Ford, Pa.

After retiring, John and Debbie spent 15 wonderful years in Lewes before relocating to Bloomington to be closer to family.

In his later years, John found joy in trying new restaurants around Bloomington-Normal, going on road trips around the Midwest, organizing his record collection, and watching for the garbage truck each week with his 2-year-old grandson.

John loved a good beer, a good laugh, and a good story — preferably one told by a stranger at a bar.

He is survived by his wife, Debbie; daughter, Becky; son-in-law, Kyle Fillipo; grandson, Isaac Fillipo; sister, Kathleen Burke (née Koch); and a collection of nieces throughout the country.
