Kai Maull to be inducted into Delaware Track & Field Hall of Fame

November 7, 2014

Former Cape Henlopen track & field star Kai Maull received word this week that he will be inducted into the Delaware Track & Field Hall of Fame Tuesday, Nov. 25, in Wilmington. The Cape Henlopen and Clemson University star won multiple state individual titles for Cape Henlopen in a short span as he ran track only his junior and senior years. He set indoor and outdoor state long and triple jump records, with the long jump records still standing. He also won several regional titles and a national title in the long jump; possibly his highest honor was winning the long jump title at the historic Penn Relays his senior year of high school. Maull went on to jump and sprint for the Tigers of Clemson University, where he was an NCAA All-American his freshman year and an All-ACC performer each of his five years as a collegiate jumper and sprinter on a team stacked with NCAA and Olympic standouts. If you are interested in attending and supporting Kai Maull, tickets are $50 per person, and you can contact the Hall of Fame organization by going to www.delawaretrackandfieldhof.org.

Mariner tops Smyrna in middle school XC

The Mariner boys' cross country team finished its season with a flurry of personal bests on the way to a 23-32 victory over visiting Smyrna Nov. 3 at the chilly UD College of Earth, Ocean and Environment course. Levi Clifton, Cole Quillen, and L.B. Harrington placed second, third, and fourth, respectively, just a few ticks behind Smyrna star Aaron Lewis. Clifton and Quillen, Mariner's one-two punch all year long, were both clocked at 11:24 for 1.8 miles, while Harrington, only a sixth-grader, obliterated his previous personal best by 40 seconds to cross the line in 11:25. Connor Hitchens closed his season in style, running 12:06 to capture fifth overall and take 40 seconds from his personal record, while Logan Dominick finished strong to take ninth place in a PR of 12:32. Gabriel Garcia ran like a man possessed en route to an 11th-place finish, setting a massive personal best of 12:48 in the process, while Parker Brown put a cap on his Vikings career by taking 12th in 12:56. Also lowering their personal bests were Christian Partlow, 14th, 13:14; Dyquan Snead, 17th, 13:52; Cameron Daniels, 19th, 14:03; and Liam Leishear, 33rd, 16:24. Other Mariner finishers were as follows: Colby Dominick, 27th, 14:51; Shamar Snead, 28th, 14:51; Mason Fluharty, 29th, 15:02; Ronan Dutton, 30th, 15:20; Jonathan Capparell, 35th, 17:22; and Maxwell Merwitz, 36th, 18:19.

Smyrna girls top Mariner 18-43

Sixth-grade No. 1 Lindsay Rambo led the Mariner girls once again as she placed third in a new personal best of 11:52, equivalent to a 13:11 two-mile. Rambo took off hard from the gun and stayed within 12 seconds of Smyrna's Abby Mace, who won the DAAD Invite last week. Fellow sixth-grader Fallon Moore followed up her phenomenal showing at the invitational with another solid race, taking seventh in a very talented field in 12:51. The girls ran with spirit and tenacity all season, and their 1-6 dual-meet mark does not reflect their tremendous talent.

Hundley, Barthlemess lead Striders at middle school states

Seventh-grader Blake Hundley and sixth-grader Emma Barthlemess were top finishers at the Nov. 1 Delaware Sports Club Junior High Championships. Hundley finished third, running the 2.1-mile Winterthur course in 12:20, while eighth-grader Brock Diaz finished 12th in 13:38. Sixth-grader Jackson Dinger was 28th in 14:55 for the Striders boys. Barthlemess, just a sixth-grader, finished sixth in a tough field with a time of 14:32. Lindsey Guidawas was 14th in 15:48 while Brooke Jones was 27th in 16:23. Mia Neubling finished 29th in 16:25, while Sadie Tunnell was 36th in 16:44. Natalie Guida was 39th in 16:55, and Myranda Beebe finished 41st in 17:00.The Striders were able to put five runners in a 37-second gap, grabbing five of the first nine fifth-graders as the future looks bright for the purple and yellow.
