Local 4-H project brings speakers to Sussex County groups

September 20, 2023

In a rapidly changing world, 4-H teens are part of the next generation of leaders that will solve systemic challenges in global food production, sustainability and equity.

In Sussex County, a team of local teens that was awarded $2,000 to address a community issue is hard at work after attending the Ignite by 4-H Summit hosted by the National 4-H Council.

Together with Hollymount 4-H Club members, Declan West and Ainsley West of Milton aim to bring agriculture professionals including farmers, ranchers, educators and legislators into area classrooms and clubs to speak about what they do and why. These talks will be geared toward many ages and can be scheduled anytime.

Earlier this year, the duo attended Ignite by 4-H, a three-day forum held in Washington, D.C. This immersive experience challenged them to boldly and holistically address pressing challenges in their communities. Teens representing more than 40 states were able to grow their skills in workshops led by industry leaders and build community with other 4-H members.

Together with adult mentors, teams developed a plan and then pitched their ideas, live, to a team of mentors from the ag industry. Altogether, 15 winners were selected out of 38 project applications this year to each receive a $2,000 grant, with the opportunity to apply for a second round of $5,000 in the fall.

“Did you know that guy on the tractor makes a living? That the food you pull from grocery shelves could be grown right here? Some kids don’t. So, we felt we should educate all ages,” said Declan West.

For more information about scheduling a talk for a youth group or classroom, contact Jill Jackson, UD Extension educator and 4-H Clubs coordinator, at 302-856-7303 or email westdeclan980@gmail.com.

There are talks for all ages of students in many areas of agriculture. From bringing a lamb to elementary and preschool settings, to introducing a grain farmer or insurance company agent to high school students, there is a speaker suitable for every group.

As the nation’s largest youth development organization, 4-H grows confident young people who are empowered for life today and prepared for careers tomorrow.
