Loyd Allen Johnson, man of many talents
Loyd Allen Johnson passed peacefully in his sleep at home in Winchester, Va., Thursday, Feb. 6, 2025.
Loyd was born May 30, 1938, in Winchester, Va. He grew up in Berryville, Va., with his father, the late Harry Willard Johnson; his mother, the late Virginia Dofflemyer Johnson Wynkoop; and his brother, the late Larry Willard Johnson. He is survived by his partner of 60 years, Dolph Spain.
Loyd and Dolph started their life together May 23, 1964, in Kensington, Md., eventually living in Washington D.C., for most of the time of their employment. Their second homes in Drum Point, Md., Rehoboth Beach and Miami Beach, Fla., were enjoyed by them, their family, and close friends.
Loyd was a graduate of the University of Richmond and George Washington University. He taught English and later became a counselor at Langley High School in Fairfax County, Va.
Loyd and Dolph loved traveling and toured all 50 states and 86 countries. Theater, especially musicals, was always a part of their lives with many visits to New York and London to see shows.
Loyd was an avid reader and has a collection of over 1000 autographed books. His love of books inspired him to leave his estate to Handley Regional Library, Berryville, Va., to ensure that library services continue to flourish and expand for the citizens of Clarke County, Va.
One of Loyd's hobbies was needlepointing. His masterful creations were admired by anyone fortunate to see them. The photo above of Loyd and his cat, Annie, is one of his needlepoint creations.
