Major sports take a snooze
This past week the only major sporting event was the NBA All-Star game. I'm not a big fan because it is the least competitive all-star game there is. It's basically a glorified Harlem Globetrotters game where players try to score as many points as possible. There are only 31 games left in the NBA season. Even if the 76ers get in the playoffs as the eighth seed, they have no chance to beat Miami in a seven-game series.
Major sporting events go into hibernation for the next few weeks. Baseball fans do have Spring training, and so far no news is good news with the Phillies. Their first official exhibition game is Saturday, Feb. 23, but good luck finding it on TV. In soccer, the Champions League has started. This is basically a playoff among the best club teams in Europe. The team that wins the whole thing is considered the best team in the world for that year. They're down to the sweet 16. The final game is May 26 in Wembley Stadium. I will revisit this when it rolls around (No pun intended).
In golf, John Merrick won the LA Open. This was notable because he went to UCLA, which is just 10 minutes from the course that hosted the tournament. He was very emotional about the win. This week is the first event of the 2013 World Golf Championships and it's being played in snowy Arizona. Yup, you heard that right! It will melt quickly, but it was worth saying. It's match play format, set up like the NCAA basketball tournament with the top 64 players in the world golf rankings being eligible. The only big name that is not going to play is Phil Mickelson because he's taking a vacation. Do you think he will take his clubs?
