Milton Arts Guild awards scholarship to Cape High senior
Milton Arts Guild awarded a $1,000 scholarship to Charles Selders, a Cape Henlopen High School senior, to continue his arts education.
The scholarship was presented to Selders June 1 by Sue Dutton, MAG board of directors president, as part of Cape High’s annual senior awards night.
Selders is a Milton native and will attend the Maine College of Art & Design n Portland this fall. He also received a MCAD Presidential Scholarship from the college to pursue graphic design.
“I don’t have to pick a major my first year, but I’ve always been interested in graphic design,” Selders said. “When I was a kid, my mom and I would go to the library every Saturday, and I would look through graphic novels and graphic arts books. This scholarship, particularly from an arts organization like Milton Arts Guild, means a lot to me as I take this next step.”
Selders has had art around him all through his life. His mother is Ali Selders, the art teacher at Milton Elementary School, and his father Bryan, head brewer at Dogfish Head Brewery in Rehoboth Beach, has a degree in painting. The couple met in art school.
“Charlie was one of four outstanding student artists who applied for our grant,” said Lynda Rae Gannon, MAG board vice president. “Our selection committee reviewed all the applications carefully and chose Charlie not only because he is a talented artist, but also because he most closely embodies MAG’s vision and mission.”
