Nancy Schmidt, woman of deep faith

April 8, 2025

Nancy Schmidt (née Hoover, Friend), 78, passed away Sunday, April 6, 2025. She was born Nancy Hoover Nov. 18, 1946, in Maryland to Chester and Grace Hoover, both of whom have preceded her in death.

Nancy was a loving mother, grandmother, and friend to all who knew her. She was the proud mother of Susan Martin (Michael Martin Sr.), Perry Friend (Carrie Friend), and Martin Schmidt (Pam Schmidt). She leaves behind five cherished grandchildren, Michael Martin Jr. (Cristy Martin), Brandon Martin (Lubina Martin), Mackenzie Schmidt, Parker Schmidt, and Miranda Schmidt. She is also survived by her nephew, Bill B. Hoover. Nancy was also a beloved sister to Catherine Wilcutts and the late Bill Hoover.

Throughout her life, Nancy found her greatest joy in being a mother and grandmother. She dedicated herself to her family, always putting them first. Her love and care for her children and grandchildren were evident in everything she did, from babysitting them to being a constant source of support and love.

Nancy attended the old Rehoboth High School and was a proud member of the Rehoboth Seahawks. She carried that spirit of community throughout her life and had a special connection to her roots in Rehoboth. She spent her childhood in Rehoboth and loved the area dearly. She would walk the boardwalk and beach almost every day, always enjoying the beach atmosphere and the beauty of Rehoboth Beach throughout her life.

In addition to her family life, Nancy had a passion for life’s simple joys. She loved making wedding cakes, a skill she used to bless her children and grandchildren on their special days. Nancy was known for her love of sparkles, headbands, and colorful, flashy clothing. Whether she was wearing a vibrant hat or a glittering outfit, Nancy had a unique style that drew people to her. She had a knack for being the life of the party, bringing smiles, laughter, and joy to everyone around her.

Nancy was a woman of deep Christian faith, and her belief in Jesus Christ as her savior guided her life. She enjoyed watching classic western films, especially those starring John Wayne, Gene Autry, and Audie Murphy, which brought her a sense of peace and nostalgia.

Nancy leaves behind a legacy of love, joy, and laughter. She will be remembered fondly for her sparkling personality, her devotion to family, and her ability to bring light into any room she entered. She will be greatly missed by her family, friends, and all who had the pleasure of knowing her.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, April 12, at Grotto Pizza, 36 Rehoboth Ave, Rehoboth Beach, in the back meeting hall. Immediately following the celebration, we will proceed to the beach for a special beach service.
