The NBA never stops

June 23, 2017

Only two weeks after the basketball season came to a close, the NBA is back in the picture with the draft.

I only watch the first 10 or 15 picks because there's only 60 players drafted. The televised part of the NBA draft only takes about three hours. The 76ers have traded with the Boston Celtics for the number one pick in the draft. In return, the Celtics received the Sixers’ number three pick in the draft and possible 76ers picks from next year.

The 76ers have picked Markelle Faults, a virtually unknown 19 year old from the University of Washington. Like everyone else, I look forward to seeing what this kid can bring to the team. Last year, his college team won only eight games, which means he must not have had much of a supporting cast. But that being said, he must be pretty amazing to have had the scouts saying that he's good enough to be the number one pick.

In the U.S. Open, Brooks Koepka won with a record tying score of 16 under par at Erin Hills. The scores were low across the board due to the fantastic weather the first three days. I think the USGA set the course up as hard as they could. The only thing they possibly could have done to make the course harder would have been to narrow the fairways a little bit.

Being a public course, they could have gone back to the wider fairways after the tournament. These professional players are so good that the only thing that really affects the scoring in the PGA tour is rain or wind conditions.

Koepka is one of the most talented players out there. He has had a lot of chances to win but has only been able to take top 10's over the last few years except for the win at the 2015 Phoenix Open. He plays a lot like Dustin Johnson with crushing drives. He's a big guy, so if he can stay healthy, he will have a long career.

And the Phillies are just awful on most days, but they did pull off a win against the St. Louis Cardinals this week. We can only hope they can do this more often.
