A new era for the Eagles

March 11, 2016

The NFL free-agency period has started and the Philadelphia Eagles are definitely not wasting much time moving on from the Chip Kelly era. They have proceeded to trade most of the big-name people that Kelly brought in during his one year as general manager of the team. Running back DeMarco Murray was traded to the Tennessee Titans for only a fourth-round pick. That shows how desperate the Eagles front office was to get rid of him.

They also traded Kiko Alonso and Byron Maxwell to the Miami Dolphins to move up to number 8 in the first round of the draft. We will see what they do with that. I hope they draft a offensive lineman or defensive player, not a quarterback. I don't think any of the quarterbacks are very good in this draft.

One of the good things they did in free agency so far is to sign Chase Daniel from Kansas City (Doug Pedersen's last team) to replace Mark Sanchez as a backup quarterback to Sam Bradford. Sorry, but Sanchez was terrible last year.

Some very surprising news from tennis. Maria Sharapova tested positive for a banned substance in connection with the drug testing at the Australian Open this year. According to her, she has been taking this drug for over 10 years and it just became part of the banned list this year.

I hope she can come to an agreement with the WTA tour to decrease her suspension. I heard the suspension is supposed to be 2 to 4 years. This would virtually end her career. She is 28, which I know is very young, but for most tennis players this is the twilight years.

In Phillies spring training baseball news, there's good and bad to report. The team has been winning a good portion of their spring training games so far even though most of the games haven't been on TV here yet. The bad news though is that one of their good young players, outfielder Aaron Altherr, broke his wrist and will be out for 4 to 6 months. Since the Phillies are extremely young this year, he was going to be in the running for a starting position in right field. Let's hope no one else gets hurt before the games actually count.
