Now I can't forget hockey

December 16, 2016

I haven't been talking about NHL hockey yet, but the Philadelphia Flyers are impossible to ignore. They have won 10 consecutive games for the first time since 1985! Ronald Reagan was president, I was one year old, and gas was a whole lot cheaper, ha ha. Going into the season, the Flyers were not expected to be contenders for the Stanley Cup this year. They were only expected to barely make the playoffs.

For now, it looks like they are going to be around for a while at the end of the season. It is nice to actually have a good team to cheer for as a Philadelphia sports fan because we know the Eagles, Phillies and 76ers are all really bad at the moment.

The Eagles actually played a lot better in the game Sunday against the Washington Redskins, despite losing in the end. Like earlier in the season, the Eagles should have won this game, but continue to shoot themselves in the foot at exactly the wrong times. A great example was in the first quarter when the offense was driving down the field trying to take a ten to nothing lead. Carson Wentz threw a terrible interception in the end zone to blow a scoring opportunity.

On defense, in the third quarter the team inexplicably let DeSean Jackson, our very good former receiver, get a wide-open touchdown pass of 80 yards. Their last three games are against prospective playoff teams in Baltimore, Dallas, and New York. We will see if they can play spoiler at all.

I was pleasantly surprised to see that the University of Delaware has hired Danny Rocco, the former University of Richmond coach, to be the new football coach. I'm surprised he took the job, because of how well he was doing in Richmond. I am very happy this happened though. Ever since Casey Keeler was fired and went to Sam Houston State, the Delaware football program has gone way downhill. Hopefully that will change.

In other surprising college football news, Wake Forest University had to fire their radio announcer Tommy Elrod, for attempting to give confidential information to upcoming football opponents. The most shocking part of this whole thing was the fact that Elrod was a coach and former player on Wake Forest's team in the recent past. Apparently he was frustrated with the head coach of the team because he wanted his job. This guy must have some serious anger management problems! Truly amazing!
