Peggy Furniss Mitchell, avid bridge player
Peggy Furniss Mitchell passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her loving family Monday, April 7, 2025, just three months shy of her 100th birthday.
Born July 26, 1925, in Bethel, the daughter of the late Howard D. and Dora M. Furniss, Peggy attended a one-room schoolhouse where, in the sixth grade, she was its only student. She often talked of how scared she was to move up to the “big” high school in Laurel. It was there that she met LeRoy “Roy” Mitchell, who would become her husband and sweetheart of 74 years. She graduated high school in 1943 and continued her education, traveling from Bethel by boat across the Chesapeake and on to Western Maryland College, later graduating from Beacom (now Goldey-Beacom) College. Roy and Peggy founded Roy Mitchell & Sons, now Mitchell’s Interiors, a fourth-generation furniture store in Laurel.
Peggy was an avid bridge player and enjoyed meeting her friends for their weekly game (many of which she won!). She continued to attend that weekly game until shortly before her passing.
In addition to her parents, Peggy is predeceased by her husband Roy, and sister Helen Herson. Peggy is survived by her two daughters, Vicki Feist (Roger) of Rehoboth Beach and Krista Anderson of West Palm Beach, Fla.; seven grandchildren, Tristan Allen, Derek Feist (Sarah), Jared Anderson, Meredith Helgren (Blake), Shelby Anderson Butkus (Josef), Trevor Feist and Delaney Anderson; 11 great-grandchildren (plus one on the way); four nieces; and her sister-in-law, Phyllis Mitchell, who was a constant source of joy, companionship and many cherished memories. She was loved and will be missed by all as she reunites with Roy to continue their next chapter.
Services will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, stjude.org, or Delaware AccentCare Hospice in Milford, accentcare.com.
