The Phillies' rebuilding begins
At the beginning of last week, Ryan Sandberg decided to resign as Philadelphia Phillies manager. I do not blame him one bit for making that decision. It was quite obvious that at the end of the 2015 season he was going to lose his job. There needs to be a lot of changes to the Phillies organization as a whole, including player turnover.
They need to start paying the price as well. Just hiring a different manager will not solve all the matters. And there are many! The Phillies' front office is not wasting any more time. They hired a new baseball operations man, Mr. Andy MacPhail, who has a very good reputation after working for the Chicago Cubs and the Baltimore Orioles in the recent past.
Both of these organizations are rebounding from years and years of futility. It can't get much worse for the Phillies. But being a diehard Phillies fan, I will continue to think positively.
The United States Women's world cup team has advanced to the World Cup finals! This Sunday, they will go up against the defending champion, Japan. To get there they beat Columbia, China, and number one ranked Germany.
The game with Germany was a very hotly contested game, but with a 2-0 win for the US. So please, join the bandwagon, and cheer on the US Women's team to victory. The final game will be a rematch of the 2011 final which the US should have won, but ultimately lost in penalty kicks. So the main story line will be one of redemption for the US and hopefully done without the need of PK's.
In Tennis, Wimbledon has started and we already have a huge upset. Tenth seed Rafael Nadal lost in the second round to a player from Germany named Dustin Brown. Dustin is ranked over 100 in the world. This is only somewhat surprising because Nadal has lost four straight years at Wimbledon to lower tier opponents. He's such an amazing tennis player, but the grass surface is just not the best venue for him.
And I might as well finish with one more sports tidbit. The 76ers just drafted Jahlil Okafor from current NCAA National Champion Duke with the third pick even though they have two centers already. I hope they keep him. I think he's going to be a very good player.
