The Five Points working group has had its say on 103 recommendations as part of the Five Points Transportation Study.
During an Aug. 27 workshop coordinated by Delaware Department of Transportation and Sussex County officials, residents reviewed, commented on and prioritized the recommendations. After rejecting 25, the working group had narrowed the list down to 78 suggestions.
The recommendations were color coded into four categories: policies and procedures; making the most of existing infrastructure; bicycling, walking and transit; and new infrastructure.
Attendees used colored stickers to highlight their priorities on display boards. They also used gold stars to indicate recommendations that should have the highest priority.
In the first hour of the workshop, ideas with high priority included pedestrian walkways over Route 1, a study of a grade-separated intersection at Five Points, and hiring nationally recognized planners and engineers to provide new, creative ideas drawing on examples from other parts of the country.
DelDOT will compile the information and present it to the 16-member working group before its next meeting at 6 p.m., Monday, Oct. 8, at Beacon Middle School.
The following recommendations will be incorporated into current projects and initiatives:
• Review the need for grade separating or restricting crossings between Frederica and Lewes before eliminating signals in this area.
• Evaluate Tulip Drive connection to Route 1 as part of the Minos Conaway Road grade-separation project.
• Study the feasibility of widening the proposed Route 24 bypass of Millsboro from one lane in each direction to two lanes in each direction.
• Study options for signage to direct appropriate traffic – local, boat, University of Delaware and walking/biking areas – under the Nassau Bridge.
• Evaluate one‐way service roads as part of the Minos Conaway Road grade-separation project.
• Study the feasibility of widening Route 24 eastbound to Love Creek.
• Study the feasibility of widening or adding through lanes on Plantation Road from Route 24 to Cedar Grove Road and Postal Lane.
