Robert Cullen Martin, artist at heart

March 2, 2025

Robert Cullen Martin died peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family Monday, Feb. 24, 2025. He was born Oct. 16, 1953.

Robert, or “Bob,” as he was known to many, was born in Beebe Hospital and graduated from Cape Henlopen High School. He was the beloved son of the late Jack and Janet Martin of Dewey Beach. His zest for life was deeply rooted in the things he loved most: his family, the blues, the New England Patriots, and Tanqueray.

Alongside many other locals, Bob played a significant role in starting the annual “Tourist Go Home” party, a cherished tradition. He was a man who enjoyed the beach, horseshoes, golf, the game of pool, and his Wednesday night poker, legendary among friends.

Bob and his wife, Melinda “Mindy” Marvel Martin, owned Martin’s Garden Center in Rehoboth for over 20 years. An artist at heart, Bob’s many designs and landscaping projects have left a beautiful, lasting legacy throughout Sussex County, a testament to his talent and dedication.

He is survived by his devoted and patient wife of 40 years, Mindy, who shared his love and adventures. Bob leaves behind his son, Matthew John Martin, his wife Kyla, and their three sons Cullen, Hayes, and Stone; and his daughter, Ashley Martin Campbell, her husband Chris, and their two daughters River and Ruth. In addition, Bob is survived by his sister, Mary Lee Martin; his sister-in-law, Cindy Martin; and many cherished nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and -nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Sue Ann Martin; and his brother, Bill Martin.

Bob’s humor, creativity, and passion for life will be deeply missed by all who knew him. His memory will live on in the hearts of his family and friends, and his legacy will continue to be celebrated through the beautiful landscapes and inspirational designs he left behind. Rest in peace, Bob.

A special thanks to Jen Philibin, his caregiver, for her love and kindness over the past year. The family would also like to thank Alecia and her team from AccentCare Hospice for their compassion.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations in Bob’s memory to Grass Roots Rescue, P.O. Box 422, Milton, DE 19968.

The burial at St. George’s Chapel will be private.
