Thoughts from the sidelines

Ryan Howard seems bitter, but will he be better?

February 26, 2016

All major league baseball teams have officially started their spring training camps by now. Ryan Howard was one of the last Phillies player's to report to camp earlier this week.

He had his first press conference with the media and I was personally surprised how defensive he seemed to be when asked about splitting playing time at first base (most likely) with Darin Ruf.

Howard has been pretty poor against left handed pitchers for the past two years, hitting under .250 overall. So platooning at first base would seem to be a natural progression as a 36-year-old player. I hope he has a better attitude once the games count and can perform at least somewhat like he used to.

In somewhat surprising golf news, Tiger Woods posted a video of himself hitting a golf shot in his simulator at his residence, in order to show the progress he has made in his recovery. I hope he does not try to ramp up his recovery too fast in order to play in the Masters.

The Masters is only six weeks away and Augusta National is an extremely hilly golf course. That would be a big risk for him to try to make his comeback there. I think a more realistic time frame will be around the U.S. Open in June. In this week's results, Bubba Watson won for the second time in three years at The Northern Trust Open at Riviera.

This is Watson's ninth victory on the PGA tour. He is one of the most interesting golfers to watch because you never know what Bubba is going to do next. Watson is an extremely moody golfer and he is very vocal about whether he loves or hates the golf courses from week to week.

The NFL Combine is this week followed by the NFL Draft in late April. This is where most of the NFL scouts get to see the potential draft picks in person for the first time after their college season is over. For some reason, a lot of people like to watch this boring process. I will not be one of them.

They just do practice drills for the entire TV time. I think the Eagles must get better on the offensive line. The line was pretty awful last season and our best lineman, Jason Peters is on his last legs.

At quarterback, I think Sam Bradford is the best option the Eagles have. This draft does not have many impressive quarterbacks available, so I think we are stuck with Bradford for another season.
