After dismantling Newark Charter 14-1 in five innings to open its season, the Sussex Academy softball team kept the good times rolling with a 10-0 victory over Seaford March 28.
“So far, so good,” said coach Gerald Jester. “Exciting start.”
Carson Gesuero started in the circle against Seaford. After her three-inning, seven-strikeout performance against Newark Charter, Gesuero showed she clearly was not distracted by her aunt coaching the Blue Jays, as she fired three innings of shutout ball and struck out three.
“I'm never gonna have speed that's super overpowering or overbearing, but I'm really focusing on my placement and spin,” Gesuero said. “If I can get the ball to move how I want, I think I can be a pretty dynamic player.”
Eighth-grader Ashlyn Troxler, leading off for the Seahawks, scored the first run of the game after reaching base on a double to center field. Sophomore Caroline White’s single to right drove Troxler in.
“It was good to jump out early on them,” Troxler said.
The middle schooler holds a lot of responsibility as the lead-off hitter, but thinks she is prepared for the role.
“I've worked hard to get to this point, and all my coaches have always helped me, and I just want to thank them for it,” Troxler said.
White came around to score on the first of Grayce Glover’s three triples.
“Everyone has each other’s back in the lineup; there are no weak spots,” Glover said. “It's very strong all the way through.”
Glover trotted home on junior Delanie Monitzer’s double, giving the Seahawks a 3-0 lead after one inning.
Eighth-grader Danica Bergh singled to score Lauren Myers and Gesuero to make it 5-0 Sussex Academy.
Troxler and Glover, who tripled for a second time, wrapped up the scoring in the second when both girls scored on separate wild pitches.
Glover drove in Troxler on a fielder’s choice in the fourth inning before Monitzer’s single plated White and Bergh, giving the Seahawks the 10 runs they needed to end the game when sophomore Rogue Garcia struck out the final two batters in the fifth inning.
