Seed-collecting and no-till planting are program topics Oct. 19

Lewes Community Garden will host a free program at 9:30 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 19, at 366 Park Road in Great Marsh Park near the Lewes Unleashed Dog Park and the University of Delaware campus.

Guests from Sussex County Master Gardeners will present a program on seed collecting and saving as well as basic strategies for no-till gardening. The public is welcome to attend.  

Collecting seeds is a fun and inexpensive way to prepare for next year’s garden. What a person thinks might be the seed could actually be part of the flower. Knowing which plant and which part of the plant to select seeds from will result in more successful germination.  Attendees will learn which seeds need cold weather to germinate and which do not. Gardeners will also learn ways to reduce or eliminate tilling to maximize soil health, since tilling can actually disturb and destroy beneficial microorganisms that help produce strong, healthy crops.

Attendees should bring a chair and water, and be prepared to walk a short distance in the grass down a small hill.
