Shamrock Shuffle 5K, 15K at Junction & Breakwater March 15
The ninth annual Shamrock Shuffle 5K and 15K will be held Sunday, March 15, starting and finishing at the Junction & Breakwater Trail. Runners will gather in the back parking lot of the Tanger Seaside Outlet Center in Rehoboth Beach and will take in the trail through Wolfe Neck, Hawkseye and the new Senators developments before turning around in front of Cape Henlopen High School in Lewes.
Tech T-shirts are guaranteed to all preregistered runners with awards to the top three finishers in 5K age groups from 9 & under to 70 & over, and 15K age groups from 19 & under to 70 & over.
Race-day registration will begin at 8 a.m. with the race taking off at 9 a.m.
Spring track & field
Cape Henlopen School District’s three track teams are in full swing with the snow gone for now and sprinters, jumpers, hurdlers, distance runners and throwers are doing their thing.
The high school teams, led by George Pepper and Matt Lindell, will spread out and try to cover the 18 events, while the middle schools have 13 events to cover.
The middle schools have good numbers, with Mariner having about 70 athletes out for the team and Beacon having about 120 athletes out.
“The kids are working hard at practice and learning all they can about track & field,” said assistant coach Gilbert Maull. “Our boys lost a lot of eighth-graders last year, so we need to rebuild this season, while our girls, who are looking for win No. 50 in a row, look to continue where they left off last year with the addition of some talented sixth-graders.”
Rodriguez, Quillen place in Pet 10K, 15K
Local Martin Rodriguez out of Selbyville traveled west March 8 to compete in the 5th Get Pumped for Pets 5K/10K/15K Run at Kent Narrows Center in Chester, Md. Just under 300 runners and walkers left the 9 a.m. start and headed for the snow-covered trail along Route 50 heading west. Rodriguez, 33, finished first in the 30-39 age group in a time of 40:49 in the 10K run, while Alan Quillen out of Seaford won the 60 & over age group in 1:16:37, finishing 24th overall.
Runners were served homemade crepes that were cooked in the parking lot of the shopping center, and there was a steady line following the race at the food tent as well as the beer tent. I think people were just happy to be outside exercising after a long winter.
Hawks 5K pushed to March 21
St. Georges track coach Kai Maull made the decision last week to postpone his annual Hawks 5K for two weeks and try again Saturday, March 21. “We had a lot of snow on the ground, and it was a cold day, so nothing was melting,” explained Maull. “It was not so much about the course and the campus, it was more about the safety of runners driving to and from the event. I just did not think it made a lot of sense to put another 50 to 70 cars on the road when we did not need to.”
Information can be found at www.seashorestriders.com. Check-in on race day will begin at 8 a.m.
“I hope we get a good weekend, and we can get a decent turnout of runners,” said Maull.
