Smorgasbord of sports... and believe it or not, NO golf!

This week I have a menu of sports talk for fans who enjoy a little taste of everything.

First off, the Major League Baseball playoffs are coming down to the final four this week. In the American League it is the Detroit Tigers versus the Boston Red Sox and in the National League it's down to the St. Louis Cardinals versus the Los Angeles Dodgers. In the American League series there is some controversy that Detroit's starting shortstop, Jhonny Peralta, is allowed to participate in the playoffs after being suspended for the use of performance-enhancing drugs. I'm of the opinion that he should not be allowed to play until next year. What do you think?

In the National League series two of the most recognized teams are vying for a spot in the 2013 World Series. These two teams have not paired off in the National League Playoff Championship Series for 28 years.! Come next week this should all make for a good World Series event and a close to baseball until spring training rolls around in February.

Second is the recap of last Sunday's Eagles game. The Birds were pretty impressive in their win over Tampa Bay. It was nice to have a game that was all but sealed up by the beginning of the fourth quarter thanks to a strong performance from backup quarterback, Nick Foles. Hopefully Foles can continue to play well with the challenge of beating the Dallas Cowboys this weekend.

Third is the deplorable conduct of the fans at the Houston Texans' game. The fans actually cheered when their starting quarterback, Matt Schaub badly sprained his ankle. This was done in response to his recent bad performances. There is never cause to cheer when any player goes down with an injury!

Fourth and last is really a question to my readers. Does anyone else not like the college football rule for overtime? I don't like the 25-yard line starting point for each overtime possession. It's too much like half court basketball for me and makes it too easy to score. Anyone who watched the Penn State versus Michigan four-overtime 43-40 game on Oct. 12 knows what I'm talking about. It prompted spirited debate in our household.
