Sussex Academy girls’ lacrosse dominates IR 22-4 in home opener
The Sussex Academy girls’ lacrosse team earned a dominating 22-4 win over Henlopen South rival Indian River March 28 in Georgetown. Making the night all the more memorable was Emiley Bisaha scoring her 100th goal.
“It was a really good way to open up our home games,” said coach Taylor Gibbs. “We had people in different positions to see kind of where our team is at and what things we need to work on; I think we got a lot out of this game.”
Bisaha registered her 100th goal on her second score of the game, which opened up the second-half scoring. The game was paused as the senior was able to take in the moment with her team.
“It was definitely a relief when I finally got it,” Bisaha said. “The first one was easy because I knew I was gonna be at 99, but the second one was harder.”
While there was still nearly a whole half of lacrosse to be played, the clock was running and the Seahawks were up 15-1 at that point.
Sussex Academy arrived to the advantageous point with contributions from Bisaha, Shelby Manlove, Shea Danahy, Ellie Merrick, Liz Layton, June Hale and Mady Lehman, who scored her first varsity goal.
“It was just really fun to see it come together,” Manlove said. “We've been working hard in practice.”
Bisaha’s younger sister Lily also picked up a pair of goals.
When all was said and done, Manlove led the way with five goals, while Layton, Danahy and Hale joined her in the hat trick club with three apiece. Merrick tied the Bisaha sisters with two goals.
Layton led the way with four assists.
“We've been practicing utilizing each other with our picks, our screens and our splits,” Danahy said. “Just trying to utilize all the openings on the field when they give it to us.”
