Sussex Master Gardeners summer workshops start July 19

July 18, 2022

Sussex Master Gardeners are hosting free summer workshops in the demonstration garden behind the University of Delaware’s Elbert N. and Ann V. Carvel Research and Education Center, 16483 County Seat Highway, Georgetown. Preregistration is required at pcsreg.com/mgsummer.

Butterflies will be the focus at 10 a.m., Tuesday, July 19. Master Gardeners Maureen Larkin and George Dellinger will show there is much more to butterflies than just their beauty. These beneficial insects are important pollinators. Adults accompanying their children or grandchildren will learn butterflies’ anatomy, what they eat, how they grow, how they live and things people can do to help them thrive. The optional guided scavenger hunt will reinforce the learning. Space is limited, so register early. Children as young as 4 years old are welcome.

The Home Grown National Park movement is the workshop topic for 1 p.m., Tuesday, Aug. 2, with Master Gardeners Karen Kollias, Louise Finn and Mary Hall presenting. This workshop will cover the basic aspects of the movement, and attendees will explore the HGNP exhibit in the garden. Participants will receive handouts, written information and tips on utilizing biodiversity and pollinators in the garden.

Insect Safari is the topic at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 23, and Master Gardener Brent March will be the safari leader. Grownups, kids and grandkids can enjoy exploring the demonstration garden looking for interesting insects of all varieties.

The Sussex County Master Gardeners will also host an open house from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday Sept. 17.
