Teens showcase talent in Shakespeare’s ‘As You Like It’

September 26, 2024

The Lewes Public Library’s teen summer Shakespeare intensive program culminated Aug. 24 with a dazzling performance of “As You Like It.”

A group of 21 local teens in grades 9-12 participated in the free program, doing text work, scene study and performance preparation over the course of two weeks. The intensive was led by Cape Henlopen High School theater instructor Sadie Andros, who studied Shakespeare at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art.

“With limited access to classical theater in our community, I am so grateful to the Lewes Public Library for offering opportunities for students to delve into Shakespeare's plays,” said Andros. “I am always so impressed by the intelligent and creative students who wake up early in the morning during their summer break just to come to the library and study Shakespeare with me.”

Originally conceived as part of the Lewes Public Library’s Spoken Word Society Shakespeare Festival by David White, SWS volunteer artistic director, the Shakespeare intensive is in its fourth year. Now a stand-alone summer program, the intensive is funded by SWS and Groome Church.

“Sadie and David’s incredible vision and leadership were invaluable in building our teen theater program,” said Emily Ellinger, teen services librarian. “Sadie really works closely with the students to hone their acting skills and understanding of the material. She also invites professional critics to observe and provide feedback to the students in advance of the production. We are so proud to offer a program of this caliber, free of charge, to the young patrons of our community.”

Registration will open in June for the 2025 Summer Shakespeare Intensive, to be held Monday, Aug. 11 to Sunday, Aug. 23.
