Roger Federer and Serena Williams won their respective Grand Slam tennis tournaments this past weekend. Thanks to my DVR, I was able to watch most of each match. Federer's match against Rafael Nadal was more like a boxing match than a typical tennis match. It seemed like each player was landing punches, knocking the other against the ropes of the ring. Roger Federer won the first and third sets, but Nadal was able to win the second and fourth sets pretty easily to force a deciding fifth set. Federer was losing 3 to 1 before he went on to win the next five games to win and add to his record 17 other Major Championships.
Serena Williams was able to defeat sister Venus in a tight two set match to win her modern day record 23rd major. The incredible part of this is the overall story of the Williams sisters. The fact that they're able to maintain this level of play over so many years and still be very good friends is pretty cool.
I hope these four outstanding players continue to bring us a few more memorable matches.
This week the PGA tour is at the Phoenix Open. This tournament is the noisiest of the entire year and is more like a football game atmosphere then a typical golf tournament. I'm a bit of a purist and happy this only happens once a year. It is always interesting to see what shenanigans take place in the bleachers on the 16th hole.
Tiger Woods came back to the tour last week at Torrey Pines after almost 2 years off from the Tour. To me, he looked very rusty and also scared of hurting himself again. I hope he gets over this pretty fast so we can see him being competitive again. He has to give up the perfection of the mechanical nature of his game and just trust his innate talents and maybe enjoy the game more.
For my "what the...!” of the week, we go to the NBA. Oklahoma City Thunder's forward, Enos Canter, pulled a real stupid move when he totally lost his cool and punched a chair and broke his arm. He is out for 6 to 8 weeks! I hope he has been fined pretty heavily by the team for doing something so careless.
I will not be talking about the Super Bowl this week, because I will be recapping it next week. Go Falcons!! Everyone enjoy the game and Lady GaGa.
