Upsets at the Men's US Open while Serena dominates in 18th Major

September 12, 2014

Going to the semifinal round Sept. 6 in the US Open, Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer were the big favorites to face each other in the finals. Unfortunately for them, it didn't work out that way at all. Their two opponents played very well in their respective matches and had fans shaking their heads. Kei Nishikori defeated Djokovic and became the first Japanese male to reach a final of a Grand Slam tournament. Marin Cilic upset Roger Federer on Saturday as well to advance to the final match. Nishikoiri came away in the final round having to be quite disappointed as Cilic dominated with pulling off the win in three straight sets. On the women's side, Serena Williams dominated for the whole tournament to win her 18th Major for a share of second place all-time Majors winner. It will be interesting to watch over the next two or three years whether she can set the all-time record for Majors wins with 23.

The Eagles better play a full 60 minutes this week against the Indianapolis Colts if they want to win. Last week against Jacksonville, it seemed like they were sleep walking through the first half. As a result of the slow start, the Eagles went into halftime trailing 17-0. But the Eagles came out of the locker room and looked like a totally different team, eventually shutting down Jacksonville for the entire second half to win 34-17. Because last week's Monday Night Football was a double header, the first game started at 7 p.m., which makes a whole lot of sense to me. I wish the NFL would find a way to have the games start this early every week. It would definitely boost viewership. The upcoming game will be at the traditional starting time of 9 p.m.

The Phillies have been winning, but it's way too late to really care except for the simple enjoyment of hanging on to summer.
