Thoughts from the sidelines

Will he go out on top?

February 12, 2016

I hope Peyton Manning decides to retire after his Broncos team pulled off a pretty significant upset win over the Panthers on Sunday in Super Bowl 50. Peyton played with injuries the entire season and was able to bring enough of his abilities to finish in great fashion.

Back in 1998, John Elway, who is currently the General Manger for the Broncos, played quarterback in that Super Bowl and chose to retire shortly after that win. Elway's performance in 1998 was far better than Peyton's was in 2016. Seems like a fitting ending to a great career for Peyton to announce his official retirement.

Super Bowl 50 was in itself quite boring even with both defenses playing very well. When it comes to Super Bowl time, we all hope for exciting offensive match ups, but once again the offensive efforts were rather anemic. Denver's defensive ends, Von Miller and DeMarcus Ware dominated the game from start to finish. Denver's defense forced a number of turnovers, the first one resulting in an immediate touchdown to set the scene for the rest of the game.

Carolina's offensive game plan was very strange. For some reason they did not want to use their quarterback Cam Newton's best attribute. Being 260 pounds and able to run the ball like a running back, you would have expected that he would have had the opportunity to bring those assets to this game. It's the most important game of the season, and the last game of the season, so why didn't they run him ragged?

Now that football is officially over, I can look forward to Baseball's Spring Training. Hopefully this means no more snow! I'm one of the rare birds that will watch every possible Phillies game that's televised. If the young players they've added to the team step up and meet expectations, the Phillies could possibly finish with a .500 record this season.
