Roger Federer won a record-setting 8th Wimbledon Title on Sunday by defeating Marin Cilic from Croatia, in a surprisingly easy fashion in three straight sets. The match was actually very difficult to watch because it was obvious from the beginning that Cilic was not performing at 100 percent.
It was revealed after the match that Cilic had a bad blister on one of his feet. I was really looking forward to the match because Cilic had beaten Federer in the 2014 US Open. If both had been up to par, it would have been a great match to watch.
But regardless, it's always good to see Federer win. Roger broke Pete Sampras' record of seven Wimbledon victories. which is an amazing accomplishment even with a less than thrilling final match.
On the women's side, Venus Williams fought the good fight but lost to Garbine Muguruza. It was clear after Venus lost the first set that she seemed to have hit some kind of a wall and the outcome became pretty obvious. I hope Venus can maintain the level of play she had in earlier matches so that she can return again to Wimbledon in the future. To Garbine's credit, she never let Venus back into the match. She was truly the champion for this year.
This is British Open week in golf. There are a bunch of American players doing well, but it's all up for grabs once the weather changes, as it's predicted to do. The current US Open Champion, Brooks Koepka, is doing well so far, but again, that can change quickly. Holding a 5 under lead through round two will be quite a surprise given the weather that is forecasted for Friday.
Royal Birkdale is considered one of the hardest courses they play for the British Open. Holes 15 and 17 are only two par five holes. The TV coverage is on the Golf channel and NBC.
