Cape girls top Sussex Central, raise record to 2-0

April 2, 2021

The girls of Cape Henlopen had little trouble with the Golden Knights of Sussex Central, winning 87-37 as each team won two relays on the day. Sussex won both the 400 and 800 meters, while Cape won the 3,200 and 1,600. The Vikings won 10 individual events to the Golden Knights’ four. Lexi Dougherty, Taylor Johnson and Mia Nuebling each captured two events in the meet as Johnson won both hurdles races, Nuebling won both distance races, and first-year runner Dougherty captured the 800 meters in 2:38.8 and the triple jump in 28-4, and ran on the winning 4-by-800 relay team. Tia Jarvis anchored two winning relays and won the 400 meters in a season-best time of 1:01.9 to lead the conference. Nuebling ran 6:03.6 to win the 1,600 meters and 13:38.9 to win the 3,200 meters, while Johnson won the 100 hurdles in 18.9 and the 300 hurdles in 51.2. Hailey Archambault won the shot put at 27-8, while Aya Daisey won the high jump in 4-8. Freshman Lainey Shockro won the pole vault in 8-0.

The most exciting race for the Cape girls was the final event, the mile relay. The Vikings led off with freshman Hannah Maney (1:05), followed by freshman Lainey Shockro (1:05), senior Aya Daisey (1:03), and junior Tia Jarvis (1:02) as Cape ran a season best of 4:17.5.

Sussex Central boys sprint away from Cape

The Golden Knights boys won all four relays March 30, and swept the high jump and hurdles to lead the charge in a dual-meet matchup in Georgetown that also brought out Sussex Academy to compete. Sussex Central, which won 14 of the 18 events, prevailed 95-50 over the Vikings. Cape was led by Josiah Miller, who tossed the shot put 45-4 and threw the discus 121-11 to pick up a double win for the Vikings. Ryan Baker held off David Wootten to win the 1,600 meters in 4:39.5, while Lance Kauffman won the 3,200 meters, racing wire to wire in 10:32.4. The Golden Knights are coached by Derek Shockro and Jen Cawthern.

2021 Henlopen Conference Track & Field Honor Roll

With help from the Henlopen Conference coaches, I will be publishing a weekly honor roll for the coaches, athletes and parents to follow the top six conference performances. Most conference teams are racing in dual and tri meets once a week, so the listing will come out each Friday. Coaches will receive the report by email, and it can also be viewed at seashorestriders.com. I published the first honor roll of the season last Friday and received many emails the next day thanking me for the weekend reading material and motivation for their athletes.

Track & Field Clinic II

The Cape Henlopen track & field girls’ team will host two more track clinics this season for young athletes, and Clinic II is ready for registration. The Future of Track & Field is Upon Us is the motto as we aim to show the upcoming athletes what the great sport of track & field can do for them. The clinic will be held Sundays, April 18 and May 2, with athletes through grade five from 9 to 10:30 a.m. and those in sixth grade and above from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The clinic will be held at Cape Henlopen High School Legends Stadium in Lewes. Registration info is online at seashorestriders.com or by contacting coach Tim Bamforth at Shields Elementary School in Lewes, timothy.bamforth@cape.k12.de.us.

Rodriguez wins Pumped for Pets 15K

The March 28 Pumped for Pets event in Stevensville, Md., saw 186 finishers in the pouring rain, well off the 336 registered participants for the 5K, 10K and 15K races. Seashore Striders member Martin Rodriguez captured the overall title in the 15K with a time of 55:51, averaging just under six minutes a mile.

“Once I got out on the course the sky let loose, but I was not about to stop at that point, so I just plowed my way through the course,” said Rodriguez. “I was happy to still average under six minutes a mile.”

Several regular beach-area runners took part in the event, showing their support for the Seashore Striders and the return of “live” racing. The 5K included Michael Mitchell, Lewes, 25:03.7; and Alan Quillen, Seaford, 28:01.0. Taking part in the 10K were Mike Sewell, Lewes, 40:35.6; Pete Rosembert, Milford, 41:03.3; John Dowling, Ocean View; 51:09.2; Connie Marshall, Ocean View, 1:16:32.6; Marian Dowling, Ocean View, 1:31:22.0; and Amy Huff, Milton, 1:39:13.2. Martin Rodriguez of Selbyville led the 15K finishers in 55:51.3, followed by Brittany Croll, Alexandria, 1:13:31.6; Beau Croll, Lewes, 1:16:03.7; Lisa Ruschman, Milton, 1:28:23.7; Deborah Arnold, Ocean View, 1:33:34.0; and Drew Herbert, Milton, 1:35:51.0.
