Dune fencing installation complete in Rehoboth Beach
Except for the planting of some dune grass after the summer season, the beach replenishment and dune repair project in Rehoboth Beach is complete.
Rehoboth received about 4,850 linear feet of dune fencing, to replace what was destroyed during last year’s Mother’s Day storm.
In an email July 5, Steve Rochette, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Philadelphia District spokesperson, said all dune crossover repairs, sand fencing, and post-and-rope fence have been completed in Rehoboth. The seaward end of Maryland Avenue’s ADA dune crossing fence was expected to be completed by July 6, he said.
It’s possible the ADA dune crossing at Laurel Avenue could get some work too.
In an email July 5, Rehoboth Public Works Director Kevin Williams said Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control has indicated it is going to have the contractor add some work at that crossing site, but that is still being evaluated, he said.
Rochette said the planting of dune grass is usually done in late fall or early winter.
In Dewey Beach, Rochette said, installation of a sand fence is expected to begin Monday, July 10, and be finished by the end of the week. Dewey is getting 2,900 linear feet of sand fencing, he said.
Between the two, about 500,000 cubic yards of sand was pumped ashore in Rehoboth and Dewey earlier this spring and summer.
