Sailing to Lewes in the 1940s

August 1, 2023

Although the Savannah Road bridge is different, this Lewes background should look familiar to anyone who’s walked down to the city dock along the Lewes-Rehoboth Canal. This image was made in 1940 showing children playing on a sailboat and the dock along the canal. Brightening the photograph reveals the sailboat came from Collingswood, N.J. The city dock is a popular place for visitors to tie up while spending a few hours or days in the First Town in the First State. Recently, the Prince of Tides has been docked along the canal for its annual visit to Lewes. The 69-foot yacht was once owned by author Pat Conroy who penned the best-selling “The Prince of Tides” in the mid-1980s. And while he reportedly sold the vessel in recent years, it still makes an annual voyage to Lewes each year. The bridge seen in this photo was replaced by the existing drawbridge in the 1980s. The current drawbridge originally spanned the canal farther south in Rehoboth and was floated up the canal on a barge.
