Joseph R. May, law enforcement officer

Joseph R. May, born May 2, 1941, in Lincoln passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family Monday, May 20, 2024, in Georgetown. He was the beloved son of the late Joseph Frank and Elizabeth (Postles) May.

Joseph had a distinguished career in law enforcement, becoming one of the first police officers in Millsboro. He also served with dedication in the Laurel Police Department before concluding his career as a correctional officer for the Department of Correction in Sussex County.

In his personal life, Joseph enjoyed fishing and camping, and he took great pride in meticulously caring for his lawn. His hobbies were a testament to his love for the outdoors and his attention to detail.

Joseph was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, Bobby May and Frankie May. He is survived by his loving wife of 40 years, Phyllis May; and children: daughter Lisa Dick (Lad), son Mike Evans (Dawn), daughter Jo Griffith (Dave), son Wesley May, son Jason May (Yanet), son Brandon May (Sandy), son Ronnie May, son Donnie May (Brittany), son Ronald May (Pam), son Linden May (Brittany) and son Joey Madden. He also leaves behind his three brothers, Fred May (Ruth), Richard May and Gary May; five grandchildren, Kristen Givens (Corey), Brandon Dick, Kaylynn Dick, Ali Evans and Buxton Arbaugh; and three great-grandchildren.

A celebration of Joseph's life will be held at a later date.
