Cape hockey dominates Tower Hill 6-0

Don’t know much about field hockey history? Cape lost at Tower Hill Nov. 12, 2016, in the quarterfinal round of the state tournament, snapping a streak of 100 wins against Delaware opponents.

Fast-forward to Sept. 21, when a young Cape team dominated Tower Hill 6-0 to run its record to 6-0 on the season.

Cape outshot the Hillers 22-2, with a 22-1 advantage in corners. Cape scored twice in the first period on goals by Macy Steinwedel (10:26) and Mairead Rishko (9:08) on an assist from Atia Sabbagh.

Sophomore Emily Wells scored in the second period off a second Sabbagh assist for a 3-0 halftime advantage.

The Vikings continued to pound the offensive zone in the second half, resulting in a pair of goals from Sabbagh and a fourth-quarter score by Rishko off an assist from Alysa McCarthy.

Cape’s challenging September schedule continues with a Tuesday, Sept. 24 home game versus Indian River (4-1), followed by a game at Milford versus the 5-1 Buccaneers Thursday, Sept. 26.

Notes: Tower Hill leads all Delaware field hockey teams with 17 state championships. Ten of those teams were coached by former Cape player Robin Adair. Cape has won 13 state titles, with 10 of those teams having Kate Windett Austin as head coach. The others were Carolyn Ivins (1979), Ruth Skoglund (1995) and Nicole Catanzaro (2011).

Cape won the JV game versus Tower Hill 6-0. MaKenzie Todd scored four goals and added two assists. Blaire Chubb and Mikaela Gordon also scored. The JV girls are 4-0 on the season and remain unscored upon with Jada White in goal.
