The popular Nicola Pizza 5K was held last weekend around the Village of Five Points development in Lewes, with 257 participants taking part and raising funds for the Warrior Weekend charity.
Milton runner Andy Gorlich, 39, defended his title by crossing the finish line smiling in 18:13. Masters runner Mike Sewell, 55, of Lewes was second in 20:08. Luis Aguirre, 28, of Rehoboth Beach finished third in 20:50.
One of the best runners that the Seashore Striders has seen in the 10-13 age group, Cameron Hastings, 10, of Randolph, N.J., ran 22:49 to win the overall female title, while 33-year-old Alexandrea Cooper of Lewes ran 23:14. Cape High senior Ally Miller, 18, of Milton finished third in a time of 23:23 to win the 14-19 age group.
“A nice crowd turned out and we thank everyone for their support of Warrior Weekend,” said Nick Caggiano Jr. of Nicola Pizza.
National Middle School Championships
Mariner Middle School’s top runners, Dylan Harp and Bee Turhune, traveled to Louisville, Ky., Nov. 9, to compete in the middle school nationals. The meet was held at Tom Sawyer State Park, which is the home to many national, regional and state championship events. Harp finished 111th in 14:51 in the 4K boys’ championship, while Turhune finished 77th in 16:28 in the 4K girls’ championship.
“We ran decent,” said coach Kenny Riedel. “Not the best race of the season and not exactly where we wanted to be, but respectable. The experience will go a long way and will help them in their future Delaware races.”
Former Seashore Striders runner Ruby Leps finished 27th running for the Without Limits Triangle XC Club in the 3K Championship, while brother Whit finished 265th in 16:46 in the 4K championship.
Horseshoe Hustle
The second annual Horseshoe Hustle was a five-miler this year with more than 369 participants, including more than 200 walkers, all gathering at Bethany Brewing Co. to support the Delaware Center for the Inland Bays.
Racing through beautiful Fresh Pond averaging a 5:20 mile clip was 39-year-old Sam Sharp of Alexandria, Va., hitting the finish in 26:49, while 30-year-old Steven Maupin of Salisbury, Md., was second in 30:05. Matt Sparacino, 47, of Harrington finished third and won the masters title in 30:08, while fourth place went to 45-year-old Mark Walchinsky of Alexandria, Va., in 31:25. Mark Neff, 62, of Derwood, Md., rounded out the top five in 31:27.
On the female side, 40-year-old Brittany Croll of Alexandria, Va., took the overall title in a time of 39:02, while 46-year-old Archer Larned of Ocean View was second in 39:08 and also top masters finisher. Cameron Crooks, 11, of Dagsboro ran an impressive 40:41 for third place, while 31-year-old Nicole Craver of Elizabethtown, Pa., ran 41:02 for fourth place. Megan Moss, 33, of Salisbury, Md., rounded out the top five finishers on the female side in 41:17.
Finish line
A small group of Seashore Striders runners will head to the Coaches Cross Country Nationals competing in Lexington, Ky., Saturday, Nov. 23, led by 13-year-old Jude Peacock in the Youth Boys’ Division. Lindsey Ford, 13, of Salisbury, Md., will also compete in the Youth Girls’ Division, while 10-year-old Angie Everett of Rehoboth will compete in the Midget Girls’ Division. Lillian Peet, 9, will compete in the Bantam Girls’ Division, while 6-year-old brother Nolan Peet will compete in the Sub-Bantam Boys’ Division. The team will leave Thursday, Nov. 21. More than 3,000 athletes are expected to compete.
