Beacon Middle School students were recently asked to think of someone in their lives whom they thought of as their hero, and both students and their selected guests were invited to attend a Dec. 20 Breakfast with Heroes event catered by culinary students from Cape Henlopen High School.
Holiday music was provided by the Beacon Middle School band and choir, and attendees listened to a special message from guest speaker Robert West, who shared words of encouragement through his spoken word poetry.
Students and their heroes enjoyed spending time together and meeting others..
Assistant Principal Dontez Collins spearheaded the event. “I wanted to do something that would help enhance our student culture, provide a sense of belonging and also facilitate a connection with the community,” said Collins. “All students had the opportunity to participate with their hero, whomever that may be, and today we had parents, grandparents, teachers, tutors and friends who joined us. I hope this can be something that we can continue to do throughout the year at Beacon.”
Collins invited one of his former teachers turned mentors, Jinni Forcucci, and his mother, Mary Bailey, as his heroes. “I wanted our students to see that no matter where life takes you, it’s important to have a hero in your corner. What better way to do that than to introduce them to my own heroes?”
