River and bay lighthouse foundation elects new board president

March 23, 2025

The Delaware River and Bay Lighthouse Foundation recently elected Dr. Ron Parks as its board president, succeeding Rick Ziegler, who served in the position for the past six years.

Ziegler led the organization through fundraising initiatives and major restoration projects at the Harbor of Refuge Lighthouse. With skills honed as an information technology executive, Ziegler’s contributions were invaluable to the foundation. His emphasis on communication kept volunteers, supporters and the community connected and informed. The board expressed gratitude for his years of hard work.

A local stained-glass artist and retired United Methodist minister, Parks has been a foundation member and volunteer for 10 years. He joined the board four years ago. His wife Ellen Parks also volunteers with the organization. Both are avid cyclists who ride local bike trails daily.

The new president assumes the leadership role on the eve of the centennial celebration of the Harbor of Refuge’s service to the maritime community. The board is planning a series of events in 2026 to mark the century of sanctuary provided by this sentry built of cast iron and concrete.

Parks said the the foundation’s biggest challenge is the deterioration of the southern end of the breakwater upon which the lighthouse sits.

“The foundation is committed to maintaining the Harbor of Refuge structure with the funding and labor provided by our generous members and benefactors. We are equally determined to explore any and all avenues to ensure that this historic landmark and aid to navigation shines its light for generations to come,” said Parks.
