Details will determine Delmarva Christian baseball’s season arc

Royals building up to battle it out with bigger public school teams

Delmarva Christian baseball has lined up nine Henlopen Conference opponents on its 17-game schedule for the 2025 season, and despite being a small, private school, there is hope the Royals will find success.

“First and foremost, we're trying to make the tournament,” said senior Kasey Bell. “We have the guys to do it.”

Bell will cover shortstop for the Royals, and will eat up some innings on the mound. He is a member of a class that features several four-year starters at the varsity level.

“With this being our last year, all these seniors that came in as freshmen were starting on a team that was mainly freshmen, so just to see it all the way through, and finally, make the state tournament is what I'm looking forward to,” said senior Malakai Jones.

Playing a lot of games with one another, the Royals’ seniors have learned to rely on one another and are hoping the plethora of newcomers to the varsity team will pick up on that concept.

“We’ve always got to trust the next person up, make sure they get their reps in as well,” said senior Malachi Light. “They'll be prepared for anything that can happen.”

The Royals believe if they can play baseball with a high IQ on defense and a selfless attitude on offense, they could accomplish their goal of a tournament berth. Pitching will go a long way.

“As a catcher, I believe that we have a really good pitching staff this year,” said senior Donato Carmona. “The balls are moving pretty good. We're throwing pretty hard, and I'm confident in all my pitchers.”

With a smaller talent pool to select from than most of their competition, the Royals’ pitching staff knows they need to be efficient when they toe the rubber.

“You gotta be on your A-game every single time because we don't have the depth,” said senior Chase Hitchens. “We don’t have 15 pitchers; we have like six or seven.”

Calling pitches and setting lineups for the Royals will be Jeff Bell, who is confident in his guys, but knows the younger lads need to get acclimated rather quickly.

“We should have a winning season,” he said. “We have a lot of young kids, so trying to get them some experience. We got five seniors, and we're hoping they will shed some light on the sophomores. They just got to grow and get better.”

Bell has his team focusing on the little things to accomplish their objectives.

“Those are the things that are going to make the difference in our season,” Bell said. “If we do those things right and do those small things right, we'll have a great season.”
