The Cape girls’ lacrosse team crossed the Bay Bridge March 29 for an 11 a.m. game against the unbeaten Broadneck Bruins. Cape is a reconfigured squad after graduating 12 seniors.
Cape is the defending Delaware state champion, while Broadneck has won the Maryland 4A title for public schools each of the last four years.
Cape jumped out 4-0 and led 5-1 after one period of play. The Bruins got as close as 10-6 before Cape took the big yellow taxi back to the beach with a 17-11 victory.
There’s no rest for the road weary, as Cape takes a short drive to Georgetown Wednesday, April 2, to battle the Seahawks of Sussex Academy. Cape and Sussex Academy are both considered among the elite teams in Delaware for 2025 and likely seeded teams in the postseason state tournament.
Cape was led in goal scoring by Haley Gamuciello with four goals, Ally Diehl with three and Avary Miller, Macy Steinwedel, Claire Lopez and Mairead Rishko each with two. Recording single goals were Amara Fruchtman and Lina Frederick.
Assist leaders were Lopez with six, and Diehl and Rishko each with one. Abbey Schaeffer was credited with eight saves.
The Bruins were led in scoring by Sienna Miller with five goals and Nora Lopes with three. Avery Katzen, Cayman Holmes and Ceci Facciponti each scored one.
Goalie Molly Robinson was credited with five saves.
“I think this is the toughest three-game road stretch we have had this early on in a season in a while,” said Cape coach Lindsey Underwood. “Ally and Avary both did a great job on the draw controls. They were finding the ball quickly, which really helped gain possession, which was a key factor in this game. Haley did a great job; she was seeing her openings and went 1-on-1 more, which we have been encouraging her to do. I was really happy to see how many different scorers we had in the game too; the girls are really starting to come together.”
Notes: There are still a dozen unbeaten teams in Delaware. Two top teams, Tatnall and Tower Hill, have yet to play a game. Caravel (3-0) looked strong in surprising Milford 12-5.
