Family Promise of Southern Delaware will host Putting Down Roots, Preparing for the Future, an informational brunch, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., Saturday, May 10, at the Village Improvement Association Clubhouse, 415 N. Boardwalk, Rehoboth Beach.
The event brings together residents, businesses and community organizations to discuss and reflect on the slow but steady and much-needed expansion of support services for the homeless in Sussex County.
Family Promise provides crucial support to families facing housing instability. The nonprofit is committed to keeping families in their homes through proactive prevention and hands-on case management.
The brunch will honor, thank and celebrate Lewes Presbyterian Church for its founding sponsorship of Family Promise, and include remarks by the Rev. Heather Rion Starr of the Unitarian Universalists of Southern Delaware.
In 2024, Family Promise of Southern Delaware provided financial support to 123 families in Sussex County to prevent them from becoming homeless. Among them, 16 families transitioned from temporary hotel stays to permanent housing.
Executive Director Carolyn Ames Kelly, LMSW, said, said “Preventing eviction and homelessness is both cost-effective and compassionate. Keeping a family in their home costs just a fraction of what it takes to provide emergency shelter. As a result, Family Promise focuses on providing rental assistance, landlord mediation, and helping with utility shutoffs, among other critical services. By working closely with community partners and pooling resources, we maximize our ability to keep families safe and well-housed.”
She added, “Funds raised from this year’s event will help us meet a critical matching requirement for our recently awarded Help Us Move In grant. Family Promise relies on community support to continue its vital work.”
To raise funds, Family Promise is holding a raffle for a 55-by-75-inch quilt made and donated by St. Martha’s Stitchers, Bethany Beach.
The event is free, but donations are appreciated. To register or buy a raffle ticket, go to givebutter.com/FPSDEBrunch25.
