Free info session on weight loss set April 23 in Lewes
Shore View Personalized Medical Care will present part two of its informational series on weight loss with a complimentary session from 4 to 6 p.m., Wednesday, April 23, at St. Peter's Episcopal Church parish hall, 211 Mulberry St., Lewes.
The community is welcome to join top internal and integrative medicine physician Uday Jani, MD, and family nurse practitioner Sumer Walker for their dynamic presentation, “Many Paths to Weight Loss.”
Jani and Walker will address the latest research on both integrative and pharmaceutical strategies for weight loss, as well as the role of hormones, inflammation and the microbiome.
“That’s a lot of ground to cover, which is the reason we’ve scheduled an extended, two-hour presentation to discuss this important topic,” said Jani. “Treating and preventing obesity is a priority here in Delaware, which currently reports a 36% obesity rate among adults.”
Ongoing study of the trillions of microorganisms in the human gut, known as the microbiome, point to the vital role it plays in supporting digestion and the synthesis of vitamins.
“Research continues to uncover the many connections between gut health and weight,” said Walker. “For example, it’s been found that the gut microbiota of obese people may be more efficient at absorbing calories, which can contribute to weight gain and fat storage.”
For women, the hormonal, metabolic and lifestyle changes that occur during menopause pose specific risks for weight gain. “Reduced estrogen during menopause frequently leads to a slower metabolism, causing women to burn up to 350 fewer calories per day,” said Walker. “Decreased muscle mass, increased abdominal fat and a rise in insulin resistance can all add to weight gain in menopausal and post-menopausal women.”
Her practical, evidence-based menopause weight-loss tips include eating extra protein and 25 grams of fiber daily, limiting added sugar to 25 grams daily, strength training three to five days a week and prioritizing a good night’s sleep.
The proliferation of diets and their efficacy will be examined, such as the Okinawa Diet, rich in a variety of fruits, vegetables and spices; and the Longevity Diet, which focuses on plant-based eating and intermittent fasting.
“Fasting protocols are associated with a host of beneficial metabolic effects,” said Jani, “including reduced levels of glucose in the blood, improved insulin sensitivity, and improved body weight and body composition.”
Jani will also address eliminating toxins from the body, found in sources ranging from artificial food colorings and preservatives to refined foods and sugars to pesticides and insecticides.
“It’s actually better than a diet, when done right,” he said, “because toxic overload triggers the body to create fat and results in unwanted weight. True detoxification creates lean muscle and reduces excess fat.”
An integrative approach to weight loss, guided by Jani’s expertise, will be explored. “The power of the mind-body connection can’t be overemphasized,” he said. “Mindfulness helps people recognize that overeating has more to do with the brain than the body. Most of us eat more when we’re stressed or lonely, so finding a mindful, meaningful practice to reduce stressors is essential.” He will also discuss the success of alternative therapies such as hypnosis, cold plunges and binaural beats.
Walker will present an in-depth look at pharmaceutical weight-loss options, including injectable GLP-1s, pills and supplements. “Our aim is to inform and educate without judgment,” said Walker. “We’re fortunate to live in an era that offers many options for weight loss, and at Shore View, we work with patients to tailor an approach that’s right for them.”
