Football is here even though the weather says otherwise
Week one of the NFL season began Thursday with a game between the Green Bay Packers and the Seattle Seahawks. These two teams are so good this could actually be a preview of the NFC championship game in January. There are also two Monday Night Football games on ESPN starting at 7 o'clock. The Eagles game is at home against Jacksonville. Considering the expectations for the Eagles this year, this is a must win game to start the season. Jackonsville had a 4-12 record last year, which was towards the bottom of the league. The Eagles need to remain focused as you just never know what can happen in that first game.
Everyone knows how big a golf fan I am. The captain's pics for the 2014 Ryder Cup were made official on Tuesday. The European captain's picks were Stephen Gallacher, Ian Poulter, and Lee Westwood. The captain's picks for the US team are Keegan Bradley, Hunter Mahan and Webb Simpson. The PGA of America decided to try to make it a bigger deal by holding the announcement in New York City where "Saturday Night Live" is broadcast. That was a bit overboard on the celebration scale even for me. They should have just had the announcements at the next Fed-ex cup event in Denver. The competition starts on Sept. 26 and ends Sept. 28 at the Glen Eagle course in Scotland.
Considering how disappointing the Phillies season has been, it is nice to be positive when talking about the outcome of this past Sunday's game, when they made Phillies history. Four pitchers combined for a no-hitter against the Atlanta Braves. Cole Hammels started the game but was pulled after six innings due to high a pitch count. The remaining pitchers were Jake Diekman, Ken Giles and Jonathan Paplebon. It was the first time a combined no-hitter was thrown by players in Phillies uniforms and only the 13th time in MLB history. It was good to see a positive team moment to build on for next season.
