March is Truly Mad
Only two teams that were significant favorites in their respective games were knocked out early in the tournament. Number one seed in the East region, Villanova, lost to North Carolina State because they relied too much on the three point shot to bail them out when they were behind. Wichita State beat in-state rival Kansas, a second seed in the midwest region, by a pretty significant margin.
Even though it messed up my bracket, once I heard that Kansas does not play Wichita State in the regular season, I was cheering for Wichita to win. I know most people would consider Michigan State beating Virginia to be an upset. However, I don't because of Michigan State's reputation as a very good basketball team in the tournament setup. Now were off to see what happens with the Sweet 16.
Last week, I talked about the Phillies extra player situations and starting pitcher issues. I hope outfielder/1st baseman Darin Ruf makes the team. I do not think he has gotten enough major league playing time to prove how good a player he can be. I think the Phillies "rule five" draftee Odubel Herrera deserves to make the team as a utility infielder.
For the pitchers, I have been very happy to see David Buchanan pitch very well so far. The Phillies need him to step up big this year. They need all the help they can get in the pitching department!
I actually feel bad for the 76ers. They have made a lot of progress since the beginning of the season, but it is way too late. They have definitely improved their prospects for next season.
In local sports, good luck to all spring sports for Cape. Everyone knows I enjoy all the sports, but I especially hope that the women's and men's lacrosse teams do well in defending their championship titles.
