THOUGHTS FROM THE SIDELINES

Are the stories ever going to end for the Eagles this year?

April 24, 2015

On Monday, the Philadelphia Eagles officially signed Tim Tebow to a one year contract. He will be competing for one of the backup quarterback positions.

I hope one of two things happens; Tebow shows the Eagles coaching staff that he has become a whole lot better after being out a football for a year or, he shows all of football he can't play once and for all. Given the Philadelphia media market, he is going to be the biggest story until they decide what to do with him.

There are only eight days until the NFL draft begins. I will be a very happy man when April 30 comes around, when the teams actually start making their selections and all of the crazy speculation stops.

In a somewhat local story, a golfer from Delaware, Justin Martinson, finished second on the latest season of "Big Break" on the Golf Channel. Richy Werenski, the person who won the show/competition, received an exemption into the 2015 Barbasol Championship PGA Tour event.

The coolest part for me though, is the fact that I actually was able to watch Martinson play four or five years ago in the Delaware State Open, when it was held locally at Kings Creek Country Club. The second place finish on Big Break was not all bad for Justin because he still won a significant amount of money from winning several of the individual challenges on the show.

The result of last night's Phillies game was very telling, as most people believe they are going to have a difficult season. Cody Asche hit a home run to account for the Phillies only run of the night. Our defense let the pitching staff down again!

The Phils were only trailing by one run in the seventh inning when our new centerfielder, Odubel Herrera, made a huge fielding mistake which increased the deficit to 5 to 1. That made it almost impossible for the Phils anemic offense to come back in just two innings.

Herrera is a Rule Five draftee. This means he has to stay on the Phillies 25 man roster for the entire year or they have to give him back to the team he was drafted from. Manager Ryne Sandberg HAS to find a different position for Herrera to play.

I think Ben Revere should be our centerfielder again and Herrera should be a utility infielder. Herrera is a talented player with a future, but not in center field.

Enough said for now.
