Too much for Brady?
The NFL announced their initial penalties of the "deflategate" scandal this week. I agree that some draft picks should be taken away for the Patriots as a deterrent to them and other teams in trying to pull off stuff like this in the future. But I disagree with the harshness of the 4 game suspension for Tom Brady.
Maybe this was done on purpose with the expectation that an appeal would be made no matter what was handed down, but I actually do hope this part of the penalty is reduced to 2 games. I also hope that the appeal process moves quickly so that the media can start talking about actual game results going on in other sports across the sports world.
With all the football stories last week, I totally forgot to mention that Chelsea won the English Premier League Championship race. They completely dominated the league from start to finish. In fact, Chelsea was at least tied for first place for most of, if not all of, this season. Now that I have followed this league for two years, I am very impressed at the overall level of competitiveness, and I personally believe that they are one of the most talented leagues in the soccer world. I am already looking forward to August when the next season starts.
Even for a diehard Phillies fan like myself, it has been very difficult to stay positive when watching the early season games. Most of the Phillies games have brought nothing but terrible performances so far. For longtime fans though, this is nothing new. In the late 1990's, and the early 2000's, the team was terrible then too! How quickly we like to forget those years.
Even though Tiger's breakup with Lindsey Vonn started the week off on a sour note in the golf world, the last day of the Player's Championship made the actual game of golf a good story at week's end. Ricky Fowler won the Player's Championship in an exciting 4 hole playoff with Kevin Kisner and Sergio Garcia. Fowler had a great back nine establishing a new course record by playing 6 under par on the last 6 holes.
In local sports, all the high school teams' seasons are winding up. In order for the Cape boys lacrosse team to have a chance to defend their state title from last year, they will have to have much more consistent performances now that the playoffs are here. For the girls lacrosse team, a somewhat competitive game last Friday against Towerhill School will probably serve them well in this years playoffs and give them a solid chance at the state title once again. Good luck to all the teams!
