Thoughts from the Sidelines

Four easy points! Pathetic!

October 8, 2015

Unfortunately, the Philadelphia Eagles could not maintain their winning formula from their previous win against the New York Jets. They had a pathetic lose to the Washington Redskins this past Sunday. Our new kicker, Caleb Sturgis (who may soon be our ex kicker) missed the extra point on the first touchdown and also missed an easy range field goal attempt at the end of the first half. Didn't bode well for a good second half.

The Eagles defense gave up the winning touchdown on the last drive of the game. The entire team is to blame, but Sturgis had no excuse for that pathetic performance. The offense was nonexistent in the first half and the play calling was rather bizarre. Chip Kelly's call for a Reverse was totally ill advised and the play totally backfired with a fumble. The time to call a Reverse is when you are ahead, not behind. Thanks to the offense not showing up in the first half, the defense was extremely tired by the end of the game. Still no excuse!

The Eagles need to win this week's game against the very inconsistent New Orleans Saints because the schedule gets a whole lot more difficult in the future. There are still very tough games ahead against the New England Patriots, the Carolina Panthers and those Dallas Cowboys again!

Last week I heard a rumor that 18 year old Leonard Fournett, LSU's running back, might challenge the age requirement in the NFL draft. You have to be 20 to be draft eligible. I think this would be terrible for professional football, given how violent the game is already.

Fournett is one crazy hulk of a kid, but if he is allowed to do this, the NFL would just be opening up Pandora's Box. Injuries are a troublesome part of this sport to begin with and letting younger players take these risks any sooner seems to be a bad idea.

Major-league baseball playoffs have started this week. As most of you can probably guess, I will be cheering for the Los Angeles Dodgers to go all the way and win the World Series. This is because two of my favorite former Phillies, Chase Utley and Jimmy Rollins, could keep my interest with good performances.

If the Dodgers do get knocked out of the running, the Chicago Cubs will be my second choice because it would be cool if they could break the 107 year "Curse of the Billygoat" to win the World Series.

True baseball fans know that story.
