Thoughts from the sidelines

Let's talk turkey

November 26, 2015

Congratulations goes to the Cape Henlopen high school women's field hockey team on their fifth straight state championship! This is a very impressive feat for any program much less a downstate public school. If the hockey players playing lacrosse continue the streak they might tally a 13th combined straight state championship for Cape. I'm sure the team will try their hardest to continue the streak next year.

In my 17 years of caring about and watching high school sports, the number of female student athletes coming from a small area like Sussex County Delaware is amazing. Also, last but certainly not least, congratulations to the Cape men's soccer team for their third straight semi final appearance in the state tournament.

I thought it couldn't get much worse but it did. The Eagles performance on Sunday against Tampa Bay was one of the worst games of professional football I've ever seen. The Eagles offense and defense were both bad. The blame can be spread over the whole team.

The Tampa Bay offense ran roughshod all over the Eagles for the entire game. For the most part, this season the defense has been better than the opposing team, but not this week! The offense did not bring it either. Mark Sanchez is no better than an injured Sam Bradford at quarterback.

There is no quarterback controversy. Bradford please come back! The final score in the game was 45-17 in favor of the Buccaneers and it could have been a lot worse.

Before the Thanksgiving Day game against Detroit, the whole team needs to look at themselves in the mirror and get out there and be professional players and not find the blame in everything and everybody else.

Thanks to one big upset, the college football playoff landscape has shifted south. The reigning champion, Ohio State, lost a very close game to Michigan State (while playing with their backup quarterback,) 17 to 14 in inclement conditions at Ohio State.

With the victory, Michigan State went all the way up to number five in the rankings from outside the top 10 while Ohio State went from number 2 to 8.

The four teams in the playoffs as of now would be Clemson University, Alabama, Oklahoma and those upstart Iowa Hawkeyes, my uncle John Spence's favorite team. There are only two weeks left until the four team playoff will be determined.

Go Hawkeyes!
