THOUGHTS FROM THE SIDELINES

The St. Louis Rams are no more

January 15, 2016

The NFL owners have voted to let the Rams franchise move back to Los Angeles from St. Louis. This was not a short process. There were constant rumors of this happening for four or five years. I was surprised that St Louis was the first team to go to the LA market because the fan base for the St. Louis Cardinals baseball team is very loyal. The NFL corporate offices better hope that the Los Angeles fans have fallen in love with football again, because the RAMS and Raiders have already left LA once before. So, if this newest venture doesn't work and it happens again, that will be a complete disaster for the Los Angeles sports market, one of the biggest in the world. I also hope for San Diego and Oakland's sake that they can find a way to stay in their respective cities instead of being the number two or three team in LA town.

It looks like I am able to report that Doug Pederson, a former Eagles quarterback, is going be the Eagles next head coach.  Chip Kelly wasn't unemployed for long. He has accepted a head coaching job offer with the San Francisco 49ers. I think that will be a decent fit for Chip Kelly. He has the ideal quarterback in Colin Kapernick to run his up tempo spread option offense if Colin can rebound from his poor showing this year. We can only hope that Doug Pederson has a much better relationship with the media and his players.

In golf news, Jordan Spieth won the opening PGA event; the Tournament of Champions. He won by a huge margin to maintain his grip on his number one ranking in the world that he attained last year. His level of play continues to be very impressive. Now he is on pace with seven victories before age of the 23 to match what Tiger Woods did at his age. It will be interesting to see whether Jordan can maintain this pace over the long haul. The Jordan Spieth story will definitely help the game of golf to stay relevant in the news while we wait to see if Tiger Woods can come back or Phil Mickelson wins another tournament.
